Hey guys! So today I wanted to talk about something that doesn't get acknowledged a whole lot. Recently Taylor Swift came out with a song called 'Gorgeous' from her album Reputation. Now, before I begin let me say that this post in no way is gonna bash Taylor Swift (I actually love Taylor Swift, her new album is absolutely fantastiiiicc). I just think this song brings to light an issue and it just really got me thinking.
So, if you haven't heard this song (first of all what is wrong with you go listen to Reputation right now), basically this song is about Taylor meeting a guy who is so gorgeous that she can't help but treat him differently based on the way he looks. She gets drunk and makes fun of the way he talks, for example. Yeah, not very nice.
Woman every day protest against being treated like an object. They say men are disrespectful when they can't see past the way they look to see that they're human, just like everyone else. They have thoughts and vulnerabilities and opinions, and they deserve to be treated with respect. I absolutely agree with this. And I think this goes both ways; there should be mutual respect between the genders.
We can all relate to the feeling that Taylor talks about in her song. Y'know, when you really like somebody and you act really differently around them, and treat them differently than you treat everybody else. This is pretty normal, but ideally we wouldn't just treat someone badly, and make fun of them because we find them to be really attractive. When you talk to everybody at the party but one guy you find attractive, you are missing out on their personality and down grading them to an object. It's like saying, 'I'm too physically attracted to you to treat your soul with the respect it deserves and recognize that who you are has a lot of great things to offer to my life (besides your looks!)'
Another thing is that you wouldn't treat someone differently because they're unattractive, or at least you shouldn't. They have just as much to offer this world and deserve as much respect as anyone else. So why would it be considered okay to treat someone differently because they ARE attractive? Either way you're basing the person's worth on the way they look.
Anyway, that's just a few of my thoughts. They're not to be taken too seriously, just remember to treat everyone with the respect that you would like to be given! :)
